Biography

August Kiuru made his international début at the 1948 Olympic Winter Games, where he was seventh in the 18 km and won a silver as a member of the Finnish relay team. At the 1950 World Championships Kiuru was fourth in the 18 km and won bronze in the relay. Kiuru missed the 1952 Winter Olympics, but was back in the international arena at the 1954 World Championships, where he won bronze at 15 km and gold in the relay. Kiuru made his last international appearance at the 1956 Olympic Winter Games, where he was 21st in the 30 km and won his second Olympic silver in the relay. Kiuru also won three Finnish titles, in 1946, 1948 and 1950, all over 30 km. After finishing his competitive career, Kiuru was a member of the Finnish national cross-country team’s maintenance personnel from 1958 to 2005. Kiuru also worked as a ski developer and production manager with Järvinen, Karhu and Peltonen ski factories.
