Biography

One of the most decorated Chinese men in short-track speed skating, Li Jiajun’s prize cabinet only lacks an Olympic gold medal. He won two silvers, being edged out on the finish line in the 1998 1,000 m and placing second in the controversial 1,500 m at the Salt Lake City Olympics. He also won three bronzes and crashed out in the memorable “last man standing” final of the 1,000 m in 2002. In World Championships, Li fared much better. In addition to two overall world titles (1999, 2001), he won 8 distance titles and two relay titles. In 1999 and 2002, he also helped China win the World Team Championships. Retiring after the Torino Games, Li became national coach of Kazakhstan for a brief while, before returning to an assistant coaching job in China.
