Biography

Richard Carrión studied at the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1974, and then earned a masters degree in management information from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1976. From a wealthy Puerto Rican banking family, he joined Banco Popular de Puerto Rico and ascended to CEO in 1989 after his father’s death. He also served on the boards of several corporate organizations, including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

In 1990 Carrión was co-opted as a Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He became a member of the Finance Commission in 1991 and eventually became its chair in 2014. He also served on the TV Rights and New Media Commission, the Audit Commission and the Marketing Commission. Carrión was a member of the IOC Executive Board from 2004-12. In 2013 he ran for IOC President, and reached the final round of voting, but eventually lost the election to Thomas Bach.
