Biography

Gonzalo de Figueroa y de Torres, the 7th Marquis de Villamejor, 1st Count de Mejorada del Campo, and 8th Viscount de Irueste, was a mining industrialist and a respected politician. He served as Mayor of Madrid in 1904-05 and in 1909 was invited by the Infante Don Carlos to become the second President of the Spanish Olympic Committee, following the Marquis of Cabriñana del Monte, founder of the committee in 1905, and Marquis de Villamejor generously supported the committee (there is some controversy about the founding date of the Spanish Olympic Committee). Granted the title of Marquis de Villamejor in 1911, he was a prominent figure in Spanish society and also served as President of the Spanish Riding Society. Gonzalo, Marquis de Villamejor was co-opted onto the IOC in January 1902 and served as an IOC Member until his death in June 1921.
