Biography

Alfred Oswald was the goalkeeper for the Rathclaren Rovers cycle polo team that represented Great Britain against Germany in the non-medal match at the 1908 Olympics. The Olympic team was made up of two of Oswald’s brothers Hammy, and Larry, and also Ralph Mecredy, the son of Richard Mecredy, the man who invented bicycle polo in 1891. The three Oswalds, plus a fourth brother, Willie, helped Rathclaren establish themselves as the first Irish champions, and remain the top team in Ireland for 10 years.
