Finishing fourth in the kayak doubles over 1,000 metres in 2000 with Olaf Winter, Ihle then won a medal of each colour, with silver in 2004 in the K4-1,000 metres, and a surprising gold medal in 2008 with Martin Hollstein in the K2-1,000 metres. Ihle then won a bronze medal four years later at London in the same event.
