Biography

Viggo Jarl was a Danish sculptor and brother of the painter Axel Jarl and engineer Carl Frederick Jarl (all born under the original name Jørgensen). Viggo Jarl settled in France, but had several major exhibits in his home country. He initially studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in København (Copenhagen), but from 1901-24 studied in Paris at the Academie de France, École des Beaux Arts and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Jarl’s works display the influence of Rodin and the classical tradition. He also created monumental works for the Marble Church in København.

Jarl’s stone sculpture Maratonløberen (Marathon runner) is located near the “Atletion” sports complex in Aarhus. The first version from 1920 was damaged, when it was transported to Paris. A copy was produced by the sculptor and presented in 1927. This second version was also exhibited in Amsterdam 1928.
