Biography

German Theodor Pilartz, whose brother Heinrich was a well-known Köln (Cologne) coin dealer, was also initially active in Köln and 1918-19 in München. Since 1920 he was a member of the “Darmstadt Secession” and worked as a set designer at the State Theatre Darmstadt and for theaters in Lille and Köln. He later worked until 1933 as a stage designer in Berlin, then in Düren. He created the coin exhibited at the 1932 Art Competitions, and other medals, plaques, and sculptures. Some coins were minted during the evacuation of the Rhineland by French troops in 1930. As a medalist he created several German Reichsmark coins in the values 3 RM and 5 RM, but also plaques and sculptures. The bronze casted medal Honorary Award of the Reich President 1930 - Constitution Day / Rhineland Liberation had a diameter of 78 mm and a weight of 116 g. The annually redesigned medals were awarded for achievements in sports competitions on Constitution Day. In 1930, the design of the medal was linked for the first time with an historic event - the Rhineland Liberation.
