Biography

Swiss graphic artist, illustrator and poster artist Carl Moos was born in München as the son of portrait painter Franz Moos, and won the silver medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in the Art Competitions in the category Graphic Arts with his poster Posters. These posters were produced for several Swiss and international competitions, such as the 1928 Winter Games in St. Moritz. He submitted five posters, of which two were shown in the official catalogue. The tourist motif Poster for St. Moritz was created in 1926, or according to other information in 1920, probably just in black and white. Several posters were produced for a Ski Jumping Competition in Ponteresina, one in 1928, but also an earlier one from about 1924. The Poster for Athletic Competition in Bern was created from a color lithograph. The motif was also used for the 7th Swiss University Championships.

Moos founded the Artists’ Association The Six, one of the first groups of artists for the marketing of advertising orders. He came to prominence for his series of sports posters, but also illustrated postcards dealing with the soldier’s life and postcards for München breweries. After his education at the Commercial Drawing and Modelling School in München, he worked as an illustrator for the München daily press. During World War I, he left München and settled in Zürich where he produced mountainscapes and genre paintings in oil, water color, and different graphical techniques. His expressionist designs for Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser were used for the staging in 1925 in Zürich. Until 1933, he was art director of the printing and bookselling company Orell Füssli.
