Shoko Matsumura, the daughter of a well-known doctor, was from the village of Otoshi, which is now part of Yamaguchi city. There, she learned to swim in the Fushino River. A time of 1:16.8 in the 100 metres freestyle at the Olympic trials in Tokyo earned her a place in the Japanese team for the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
