Biography
Ángel Pérez was a sprint canoeist who paddled for Cuba at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and for the United States at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 1991 he won four gold medals and one silver medal at the Pan American Games, while in 1990 he garnered four gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games, competing for Cuba at both events.
In 1993 Pérez and two of his Cuban teammates left their training center in Mexico City and escaped to the USA, where they sought asylum in Cuba. In 1996 Pérez could not compete at the Olympics as he was not yet a US citizen.
Pérez continued to compete into the 2004 season but retired after that year. He became a certified general contractor in Miami.
