Biography

Kristy Kowal was a breaststroke specialist who won silver in the 200 breaststroke at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Kowal swam in college at the University of Georgia and won eight NCAA titles and 10 US titles. She was the first American woman to break one minute for the 100 yard breaststroke (short-course).

Kowal competed at the 1998 and 2001 World Championships, winning gold medals in 1998 in the 100 metre breaststroke and the medley relay. She added a 1998 silver in the 200 breaststroke and the 2001 50 metre breaststroke. At the Pan Pacific Championships she won five medals from 1997-2002, with a gold medal in the 1997 medley relay.

Kowal later became an elementary school teacher. She has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame in 2009, the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, University of Georgia’s Circle of Honor in 2012 and the Georgia Aquatic Hall of Fame in 2013.
