Biography

Walewska Moreira de Oliveira, simply known as Walewska, was a Brazilian volleyball player who competed at three consecutive Olympic Games, winning medals at two of them. Walewska began her career with Minas in 1997 before playing with several other teams in Brazil. From 2004 to 2011 she moved to Europe to play for clubs in Italy, Spain, and Russia, after which she returned to Brazil, playing for six different teams from 2011 to 2022.

Walewska achieved her first international success with the Brazilian team when they won gold at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. The following year she won bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in a tight contest against the United States. At the 2004 Athína Olympics the Brazilian team just missed out on a medal with a fourth-place finish, but went on to win the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Walewska also won a silver at the 2006 World Championships in Japan, and silver medals at the World Cup in 2003 and 2007, also in Japan.

In September 2023 Walewska was found dead after a fall from the 17th floor of the building where she lived in São Paulo. She was 43.
