Robert “Bob” Meyers was playing ice hockey with the Edmonton Mercurys when he was called to help represent Canada in the sport at the 1952 Winter Olympics. A defenseman, he played in two games and scored as many goals at the tournament, helping his team take home their nation’s last gold medal in Olympic ice hockey for half a century. His wife Rose kept the team scrapbook that recorded their Olympic journey and subsequent three-month tour of Europe. As a member of his Olympic team, he was inducted into the Alberta Sport Hall of Fame Museum in 1968. Meyers served in the South Pacific as a tail gunner with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1939-45. His career was working at Waterloo Motors until his 1989 retirement. He later took up curling and in 1963 played on the Royal Canadian Legion Curling Team that won both Provincial and National titles.
