Biography

Sverre Stensheim was a successful Norwegian cross-country skier during the 1950s and 1960s. He is the only person since World War II to win the five-mile race in Holmenkollen in three consecutive years (1959-1961).

When he was growing up, Stensheim lived on a remote farm in Nerskogen. He had to ski many miles to get to Oppdal, before catching a train to Trondheim to compete in races. Stensheim won his first national title in 1959. He competed at 16 editions of the Norwegian Skiing Championships and 17 races at Holmenkollen. As well as four World Cups between 1954 and 1966, Stensheim also competed at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics and the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics.
