Biography

Werner Stocker was an economics student at the University of Basel when he teamed up with Ekkehard Fasser, Kurt Meier, and Rolf Strittmatter to form a four-man bobsled crew that would come in third at the 1987 European Championships. In 1988 Strittmatter was replaced by Marcel Fässler and, together, they travelled to the 1988 Winter Olympics, where they pulled off a surprising victory, taking advantage of a disastrous third run from defending Olympic champion Wolfgang Hoppe’s East German team and winning by a margin of 0.07 seconds. Stocker never again won a major international medal and soon returned to his studies in Basel.
