Sailing at the 1936 Summer Olympics

Dates 4 – 12 August 1936
Medal Events 4

Four yachting events were contested at the 1936 Olympics, all in mixed classes. The monotype event was often termed the Olympic Monotype class, while the Star class was added for the first time, and the then standard larger classes, the 6- and 8-metre, were also raced. The Olympic Monotype was not the same as the class in 1924, often also called the Olympic Monotype, but was more correctly called the O-jolle, or Olympiajolle class in 1936. It was designed in 1933 by Hellmut Wilhelm Strauch specifically for the 1936 Olympics.

The events were contested at Kieler Förde, or the Firth of Kiel, an inlet on the Baltic Sea, starting at the northern German city of Kiel, and projecting into the Bay of Kiel. This site would also be used for the 1972 Olympic yachting events, although the marinas were different.

All four classes had seven races with points awarded, although in the 8-metre class a sail-off race for the silver and bronze medals was held. The points for first place in each race were equal to the number of boats entered, down to 1 point for last place in each race. The four events were won by four different nations. Six nations won medals in 1936 yachting, led by Germany with three, with Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden winning two, and Italy taking one medal, a gold in the 8-metre class.
