Hockey at the 1956 Summer Olympics

Dates 23 November – 6 December 1956
Medal Events 1

The 1956 Olympic hockey tournament took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Olympic Park Stadium, both in Melbourne. The tournament consisted of 12 teams, who were separated into three groups of four teams each. Four teams advanced from the round-robin groups to the semi-finals, with one team from Groups A and B, and two teams from Group C, because that was considered the strongest group.

There were originally supposed to be 16 teams, nominated by the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) based on their national rankings, but the Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, and Portugal withdrew

India won its sixth consecutive gold medal, winning every Olympic hockey tournament from 1928-56, but this would end the streak, as Pakistan would win in 1960. In Melbourne, Pakistan made the final, where they lost to India by only 1-0. Germany defeated Great Britain, 3-1, in the bronze medal match.
