Tennis at the 1992 Summer Olympics

Dates 28 July – 8 August 1992
Medal Events 4

Tennis was again on the 1992 Olympic Program, after it was returned to the Program in 1988 after an absence of 64 years. Once again there were four events, with men’s and women’s singles and doubles. The events were held on clay courts at the Centro Municipal de Tenis Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, a private tennis club in the Catalan capital.

Nine nations won tennis medals in 1992, with the United States and Spain both winning three medals, but the US won two gold medals, in both women’s events. In the women’s singles, Jennifer Capriati upset two-time defending champion Steffi Graf of Germany, who had also won the 1984 demonstration event. Their women’s doubles champion team of Mary Joe Fernandez and Gigi Fernández, had been born, respectively, in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
