In 1952, the Olympic Alpine program was changed slightly, dropping the combined event, and adding giant slalom. The standard three-events of downhill, giant slalom, and slalom for men and women remained the Olympic standard from 1952-1984. But after this year, the program would expand, with the addition of the super-G (super giant slalom) and the return of the combined to the Olympic program. The Alpine events in 1984 were contested on two separate mountains – Bjelašnica and Jahorina. That was not unusual, but what was different is that the events were segregated with the men’s competition held on Bjelašnica and the women’s events on Jahorina. Jahorina is a 1,913 metre (6,276 feet) high mountain, in the Republic Srpska, just southeast of Sarajevo, while Bjelašnica (=White Mountain) stands 2,067 metres (6,782 feet) tall, bordering Jahorina and Mount Igman (site of the ski jumping), to the southwest of Sarajevo. In addition to the regular program, four events for disabled skiers were held as an exhibition.
