The luge events at the Albertville Winter Games were held in the neighbouring valley of La Plagne. Construction began on the track in 1988 and was completed by December 1990. Under the track configuration used for the men’s luge the track measured 1250 m with an average gradient of 8.8%. The course used for the women’s singles and for the doubles event was slightly shorter at 1143 m but had an average gradient of 8.9%.
A unified German team containing the best from both East and West competed for the very first time and although the German domination did not reach the level of 1988 they were the most successful nation. The one title they failed to win came in the women’s event where the Austrian Neuner sisters finished 1-2.
