Since he had narrowly lost out to Jens Müller for the 1988 Winter Olympic title Georg Hackl had become the outstanding figure in men’s luge and had won two World Championship titles and two World Cups. His only championship defeat had come in 1991 when he lost his world title to the Italian Arnold Huber. In Albertville the German army sergeant was relatively unchallenged as he put together a series of four consistently fast runs to finish ahead of two Markuses from Austria, Prock and Schmidt. This event marked the debut in Olympic luge of two unlikely winter sports nations in Bermuda and the US Virgin Islands.
