Carl Westergren was little known prior to 1920. He had never before competed internationally. However, he was not challenged in winning the gold medal in this class. Westergren eventually competed in four Olympics and won three gold medals. He was also world champion in 1922 and won three European championships during his career. The 1919 Inter-Allied Champion was František Kopřiva of Czechoslovakia. Kopřiva was entered at Antwerp, and was favored in a pre-meet review by Vélo-Sport, but he competed in the lightweight class.
