Michael Diamond (AUS) was the favorite, having won gold in 1996 and 2000, and multiple medals at international meets. But the title went to the Czech Republic’s David Kostelecký, who won quite easily. He was tied after the qualifying round with the defending gold medalist, Aleksey Alipov of Russia. But Kostelecký was perfect in the final round to win gold over Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo, who repeated his silver medal performance from Athina. Alipov dropped back to a tie for third but won the bronze medal in a shoot-off over Diamond.
