Description

Cricket was contested only at the 1900 Paris Olympics, when a British squad beat a French team, which was mostly actually made up of British residents of France. The sport is currently governed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which was founded on 15 June 1909, in London, England, with three founding members: England, Australia, and South Africa. The organization was known as the Imperial Cricket Conference from its foundation until July 1965, and as the International Cricket Conference until July 1989, when it was rebranded to the current name. As of January 2026, the ICC has 12 Full Members (those that play Test cricket) and 94 Associate Members.

The ICC is currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but there is little chance cricket will return to the Olympic Programme in the form of Test Cricket, where the matches can last up to five days, as the sport will not fit well into a 2-week programme. However, the ICC has promoted the idea of cricket as an Olympic sport by using a shorter format called Twenty20 (also known as T20), a fast-paced version of the game with limited overs (20) and only a single innings, and in which each match can be played in 2-3 hours.

In August 2022, the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee shortlisted nine proposed sports for consideration as optional events for those Olympics, with one of those sports being cricket. At the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, India, the IOC approved T20 Cricket as an optional sport for the 2028 Olympics, along with four other sports.
