Biography

A. A. (“Baby”) Arathoon was born in Iran of Armenian descent and was an all-around athlete in his youth. He moved to Kolkata (Calcutta) in 1927 to attend the Armenian College where he became noted for his skill in boxing. While at school he won multiple heavyweight championships at the All India Boxing tournament as well as the Burma and Ceylon heavyweight championship in 1934, and was the Amateur Heavyweight Boxing Champion of India, Burma and Ceylon from 1941 until 1948. He was chosen as the captain of the 1948 Indian boxing delegation for the London Olympics and was due to compete in the heavyweight division, but was ruled ineligible to compete as he was born in Iran. He later emigrated to Australia.
