Biography

German ice hockey defender Uwe Krupp, father of [Björn Krupp, participated in the 1998 Nagano Olympics as a player and in 2006 at Torino and 2010 at Vancouver as the chief national coach. In total, he won 19 international caps and scored two goals.

Krupp was the first German ice hockey player to win the Stanley Cup, with Colorado Avalanche in 1996. At club level, he played with Kölner Haie (1982-86), Buffalo Sabres (1986-91), New York Islanders (1991-94), Nordiques de Québec (1994-95), Colorado Avalanche (1995-98), Detroit Red Wings (1998-2002), and finally Atlanta Thrashers (2002). In 1984 and 1986 he was German Champion with Kölner Haie. In 2002, his club Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup, but Krupp did not play in the final series.

Krupp turned to coaching after his active career and coached the German national team from 2005-11, Kölner Haie (2011-15, and from 2020), Eisbären Berlin (2015-18), and HC Sparta Prag (2018-20). Krupp was inducted into the International Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017 and into the German Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1990, he was banned for 18 months due to a positive doping test with ephedrine.
