Francis Richards enjoyed sailing successes pre-World War I aboard the 7-metre Ginevre. After the War he raced the slightly smaller Brat and, along with fellow crew member T. Hedberg, competed in the 18-foot open class at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics. Brat was the only competitor but it remains unclear whether they actually finished the course and were ever awarded medals.
Richards, who was also a yachting journalist, raced his new 6-metre boat Oui in the 1920s before having considerable success in the 1930s with his with his 6-metre International Class Felma. Richards served on the committee of the Soling Classes Racing Association, and was also a member of the Yacht Racing Association.
