Biography

Belinda Cordwell was a New Zealand tennis player who played professionally from 1982 to 1991. Cordwell achieved a career-best singles ranking of 17 in the world in December 1989, and a doubles ranking of 35 in the world in May 1989.

Cordwell won her first ITF singles title in October 1983 in Newcastle, Australia, beating American Deeann Hansel in straight sets. The following May she won her first of 11 ITF doubles titles, teaming with Julie Richardson in Flemington, United States. Cordwell and Richardson would regularly pair together with the duo winning six ITF doubles titles.

Cordwell competed in the singles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics where she lost in the first round to Britain’s Sara Gomer. Despite a poor performance at the Olympics, the following year would yield Cordwell’s best results of her career. In January 1989 she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, losing to Helena Suková. In April 1989 Cordwell won her one and only WTA title, beating Akiko Kijimuta in straight sets at the Singapore Open.
