Biography

Anton “Toni” Kuster started his canoeing career with a club in Meilen, and was the Swiss champion for folding boat singles in 1950 for both long and short distances. He moved to Rapperswil in 1951 where he was one of the six founding members of Kanuclub Rapperswil-Jona, and successfully defended his championship title once again. At the 1952 national championships held in Rapperswil, Kuster paired up with Hans Straub of Zürich to win the national title in the K2 1,000 event, and score a second place finish in the K2 10,000 (behind Werner Müller and Werner Bieri). This led to his selection to the 1952 Swiss Olympic team, and he competed alongside Straub in the men’s K2 1,000 metres race held in Helsinki. There, the pair would finish fifth in their heat, and not advance to the final round.
