Biography

Chris McKivat is considered one of Australia’s best rugby players in both codes, rugby union and rugby league. In both codes, he captained the Australian national team to victory on tours in Great Britain. A player for Glebe and New South Wales, he made his debut for the Wallabies in 1907, and then led the team on its first tour of Britain in 1908. In a match against Cornwall, in which McKivat scored one try, he won an Olympic gold medal. After returning to Australia, he switched codes to rugby league, playing for the Glebe Dirty Reds. He played test matches for the Kangaroos in 1910 (against New Zealand), and 1912, when he once more captained a tour of Great Britain. McKivat went on to become a coach, winning the 1922 Premiership with North Sydney. In 2005, he was inducted in the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame.
