Carlo Asinari Di San Marzano was a descendant of one of the oldest and most aristocratic families in Piedmont. Following some success in various equestrian competitions, he concentrated on show jumping. In 1908, he was among the best students at the Tor di Quinto school, later becoming captain of the Aosta Lancers Regiment.
After World War I, Asinari Di San Marzano resumed equestrian events, proving to be among the best riders of the period. He competed at the 1920 Antwerpen Games, and with the Italian team won an eventing silver medal, and jumping bronze. Asinari Di San Marzano continued to ride for some time after than, but without any noteworthy results.
