Biography

German show jumper Otto Becker participated in the 1992 Barcelona, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athens Summer Games. He won the team gold medal in 2000 and added a team bronze four years later. Germany was originally the gold medalist with 9.00 points in 2004, but Ludger Beerbaum had to be disqualified afterwards because his horse Goldfever 3 was doped. As a result, Christian Ahlmann’s cancellation result was used and the team fell back to bronze. The IOC made this decision retrospectively in September 2005.

Becker’s best individual result was fourth place in 2000. In 1990 he won team silver at the World Championships and in 2003 the team gold at the Europeans, having previously won a team bronze in 2001.

Domestically, Becker won the national title in 1990 and 1994, and in 2000, he won the Grand Prix of Aachen. From 1993-98 he was married to dressage rider Nicole Uphoff. Becker originally trained as a wine grower but became Germany’s national chief show jumping coach in 2009.
