Yücel Seçkiner first graduated from the Turkish Military Academy before graduating from the Physical Education Department at Gazi University. Seçkiner then worked as an instructor, earning multiple refereeing and coaching certificates in dozens of different sports, and coaching both the Army National Football and Athletics Teams. He was awarded with the Olympic Order in Bronze in 1983 and the Distinguished Gold Star Award from the International Wrestling Federation in 1991. In the 1990s Seçkiner moved into politics, serving as a Minister of State in the Turkish parliament from 1997 to 1999.
