A lieutenant in the Irish Army, Patsy Kiernan was runner-up in the Aga Khan Trophy at the 1954 Royal Dublin Horse Show on Ballynonty, a horse named after a village in Tipperary. The following year Kiernan and Ballynonty helped the Army’s show jumping team win the International Challenge Trophy at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show at Harrisburg, with Keirnan having the only clear round of the competition.
At the 1956 Olympic show jumping competition in Sweden, Kiernan and Ballynonty finished 27th in the individual event and seventh (out of 20) in the team competition. At the time of Kiernan’s death in 2003 he ran the Eden Lounge public house in the Dublin suburb of Rathfarnan. It had been in the Kiernan family since 1750.
