Peter Lichtner-Hoyer

Peter Lichtner-Hoyer fought for the Axis during World War II and was so badly injured that doctors believed he would never walk again. Not only did he walk, however, but he trained in equestrian after the conflict and rose to become one of Austria’s best international horse riders. His career spanned 24 editions combined of the World and European Championships, as well as two editions of the Olympic Games.

In 1956 he took part in the Stockholm Equestrian Games in the jumping event, while in 1960 in Rome he competed in modern pentathlon, finishing 25th individually and 12th with the team. Following the conclusion of his competitive career, he wrote books, ran a stud farm, and gave lectures on sport and riding into an advanced age. He was recognized for his work in 2001, when he received the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria.
