Biography

Hartwig Steenken was a show jumper who won the gold medal with the West German team at the 1972 München Summer Games. Individually he came in fourth and four years earlier he finished 26th at Mexico City. He won two international individual titles at the 1971 Europeans and the 1974 Worlds in show jumping. At the 1975 Europeans he added a silver medal.

In 1977 he broke the amateur rules by signing a promotional contract with Campari. Only 12 days later a passenger crashed into his car when Steenken was returning from an amateur football (soccer) match, and Steenken fell into a coma and died six months later.
