Biography

In the 1940s and early 1950s Knud Andersen was one of the best Danish amateur cyclists. Andersen won his first amateur title in 1941 when he became the national road race champion, with him winning his second title in 1948. On the track he also won the national amateur pursuit title on five occasions (1943, 1947–49, 1952).

In 1948 Andersen competed in the road race at the London Olympics where he was the 28th and last cyclist to finish out of the 101 who started the event. The following year he won gold in the men’s individual pursuit for amateurs at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in his home city of København. Andersen continued to have success in races in Scandinavia, returning to the Olympics for the 1952 Helsinki Games where he rode in the 4,000 metres team pursuit.
