During the late 1950s and early 1960s Mohamed El Gourch was one of the best cyclists in Morocco. In 1957 El Gourch won two stages of the Tour of Egypt before becoming the Moroccan road race champion in 1959. He then won three more consecutive national road race titles, along with three editions of the Tour du Maroc (1960, 1964–65). At major international sporting events he won bronze in the team road race at the 1959 Mediterranean Games before competing in the road race and 100 kilometres team time trial at the 1960 Roma Olympics.
