From 1954 to 1961 cyclist Gheorghe Calcișcă rode in seven editions of the Tour of Romania. Calcișcă’s early performances at his home race gradually improved, with him finally breaking into the top ten in the general classification in 1956 when he finished ninth. Three years later he finished tenth overall, in addition to winning his first individual stage of the race. He rode in two more editions of the race, winning another stage in 1961 and finishing eighth overall. In 1960 Calcișcă also competed in the individual road race at the Roma Olympics, where he was the 76th and final rider to finish the course.
