Biography

In the 1960s and 1970s Liam Horner was one of the best cyclists in Ireland, representing the Lorraine club in Dublin. Horner started his career with wins in races in Dublin in the mid-1960s, before winning the 1965 edition of the Tour of the North in Belfast. The same year he also became the first cyclist from Ireland to finish the Milk Race, riding as part of an international all-stars team. Horner then won the Manx International race on the Isle of Man in 1967, followed by the Dublin five-day race one year later. In 1968, he also won two stages of the Tour of Ireland, finished seventh overall in the Milk Race, and competed in the road race at the Mexico City Olympics.

Horner continued with his good form, winning another Dublin five-day race in 1969, becoming the Irish national road race champion in 1971, and winning the overall classification at the 1972 edition of the Tour of Ireland. He then returned to the Olympics to ride in the road race and the team time trial at the München Games. Horner competed in further races throughout the 1970s with more victories in Dublin.
