Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s cyclist Ali Hüryılmaz was a mainstay at the Tour of Turkey, winning stages at the 1969 edition, before winning the overall race in both 1973 and 1975. During this time Hüryılmaz was also part of the national cycling team, winning bronze in the team pursuit at the 1971 Mediterranean Games. The following year he competed in both the road race and the team time trial at the München Olympics, finishing 73rd and 24th, respectively.
