In 1966 Hipólito Pozo won the inaugural edition of the Vuelta al Ecuador cycling race, including taking a stage victory along the way. His brother Jaime was also a talented cyclist and won the Vuelta al Ecuador on three occasions (1967, 1971–72), with another brother, Jacinto, working as their coach and mechanic during their races. Two years later Hipólito was selected to represent Ecuador at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Whilst he did not finish in the road race, he did place 22nd in the team time trial, with yet another brother, Arnulfo, also being part of the quartet.
