Throughout the 1970s cyclist José Prieto rode in multiple races in both his native Cuba and at several international sports competitions. A regular at the Vuelta a Cuba, Prieto won multiple stages of the race during the decade, and was also a mainstay in the national cycling team. In 1972 he was selected to ride in the road race at the München Olympics, but did not finish the course. He had more success two years later, taking gold in the team time trial at the Central American and Caribbean Games, along with bronze in the same event at the Pan American Cycling Championships. One year later Prieto won silver in the event with compatriots Gregorio Aldo Arencibia, Carlos Cardet, and Roberto Menéndez at the Pan American Games. Prieto also raced in the three consecutive editions of the Peace Race in Europe from 1973 to 1975.
