Biography

During his cycling career Gregorio Aldo Arencibia had an impressive record at the Vuelta a Cuba stage race, winning the overall classification, the King of the Mountains and points jersey at the 1972 edition. Arencibia won the race again in 1976 and 1980, and finished second in 1971 and 1978, and third on a further three occasions. At the Pan American Games he won four medals, with gold in the team time trial in 1971, followed by gold in the road race and silver in the team time trial in 1975. His final medal came four years later at the 1979 Games, with another team time trial silver.

Arencibia represented Cuba at three Olympics, competing on both the road and track at the 1972 München Games. In the road race he finished 75th, just over four minutes behind the winner, but only 90 seconds behind the main peloton of riders. Four years later in Montréal he competed in both the road race and team time trial, finishing 14th in the latter. His final Olympics came in Moskva in 1980, where he failed to finish in the road race. Arencibia also had success at the Central American and Caribbean Games when he won gold in the team time trial in 1974 in Santo Domingo.
