Biography

The career of Yugoslav road cyclist August Prosenik spanned either side of World War II, with him competing at two Olympic Games. As a young rider Prosenik won three consecutive national championships in the road race from 1934 to 1936 as a junior. He also won the Yugoslavian road race title as a senior in 1936, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Berlin Games he tied for 12th place in the road race with Frode Sørensen of Denmark, with both cyclists being only two seconds behind the winning time.

One year later Prosenik won his second national title in the road race, along with wins in the Tour of Croatia, the Tour of Yugoslavia, and the Beograd-Sofia race. He won the Tour of Serbia in 1939 before winning three more national road race titles from 1940 to 1943. Prosenik continued to win races in Eastern Europe, including victory at the 1946 edition of the Tour of Romania and the Peace Race in 1948. He returned to the Olympics for the 1948 Games in London but failed to finish in the road race. Following his retirement Prosenik worked as a coach for the Yugoslav team before becoming a sports administrator.
