Biography

Road cyclist Michael Schiffner was a member of the East German 100 km time trial team that finished a disappointing 10th at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. From 1972-76 he raced the Peace Race (Friedensfahrt), placing second in 1976. In 1972 and 1973, he won the race Around Berlin. He also earned four East German national titles: twice with SC DHfK Leipzig in the 100 km time trial (1971-72) and in 1971 and 1974 in the individual road race. Schiffner later became a cycling coach and after re-unification was a manager of road cycling teams. He was married to athlete Christina Heinich.
