As one of the best cyclists in his country Boyan Kotsev was the captain of the Bulgarian national team from 1952 until 1960. During this time Kotsev raced in two Olympics, riding in the road race and team time trial in both 1952 and 1960, as well as the 4,000 metres team pursuit on the track at the Helsinki Games. He also competed at six editions of the Peace Race during the decade, placing fourth in 1958 for his best finish. Back home Kotsev became the national road race champion in 1958 and dominated the Tour of Bulgaria, winning three consecutive races from 1958 to 1960. He later served as the chair of the Bulgarian Cycling Union before becoming their honorary President.
