Czechoslovak cyclist Josef Volf began his career in the early 1950s primarily competing in track events. Volf became the national champion in the team pursuit in 1959 and the individual pursuit in 1960. His performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Roma Games, where he placed fifth in the team pursuit with his compatriots. In 1961 and 1962 he finished as the runner-up in both the individual and team pursuit at the Czechoslovakia championships before switching his focus to the road. Volf rode in two editions of the Peace Race, finishing fourth on stage 9 in 1963 and fifth on stage 14 a year later. Towards the end of his career, he then competed in several other stage races in Europe including the Tour of Belgium and the Tour of Sweden.
