Janez Zakotnik began his cycling career with several wins in Yugoslavia in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Zakotnik soon became part of the national cycling team, winning bronze in the team time trial at the 1971 Mediterranean Games. One year later he rode in both the road race and team time trial at the München Olympics, finishing 21st with his compatriots in the latter. That same year Zakotnik won the road race title at the national championships before winning the race again in 1974.
